November – December in France

We arrived in the north of France with Sassy by way of the Eurotunnel on the 22nd of November with no real plans except to get to the area of Poupas, France by the 2nd of December. We booked a lovely 5 week house sit in a restored stone country home near the village of Poupas.

7 regions so far

Huge piles of these lined the roads in the north of France

Overall we have ridden through and stayed in 7 regions of France so far on this journey: The Nord-pas-de-Calais, Picardy, we skirted the edge of Upper Normandy, the Centre region, passing through the Poitou-Charentes on the way to the Marais Poitevin, down though Aquitainge to Bordeaux and finally eastward to the north of the Midi-Pyrenees region for Poupas and Lavit.

Our first official day of travel was very long and cold, as we rode our Ural sidecar motorcycle between the London Gatwick area and the town of Lens, France. The roads were great overall and even better once we entered France however, arriving in the dark was not something we want to make a habit of. This trip is about enjoying the culture and pace of the places we visit, not about making miles.

Watch out for other travellers

No highways for us

As a rule, we prefer to avoid the toll roads and highways in exchange for the back roads and smaller towns along the way. The tributary road speeds are more conducive to Sassy’s sidecar set up especially with all the round-a-bouts. Its nice to be able to roll around between 60-90 km/hr. Nowhere fast but everywhere cool is our moto for a reason!

Take the time to look up into the trees.

I plan to post a few stories over the coming week reflecting on the people, the food and the amazing views along the road. Thank you for checking in!

Take care and keep on travelling,

Dan&Sam
